Extended Support
Understanding the Role of an End-of-Life Doula
The concept of an EOL Doula evolved from that of a birth doula—a person who helps guide mothers through childbirth by providing spiritual, emotional, informational, and hands-on support. EOL Doulas do essentially the same thing, but for the end-of-life process.
We stay with individuals in our care and their families before, during, and after death, providing emotional and logistical support and guidance. We are an empathetic but neutral, calm, level-headed presence who can guide you and your family through end-of-life preparations that may feel overwhelming to embark on alone.
What End-of-Life Doulas Do

How End-of-Life Doulas Complement Hospice Care
The Gap We Fill
EOL Doulas are non-medical companions who complement the services provided by hospice and palliative care teams. We don’t replace medical professionals; rather, we fill a vital gap by offering extended presence, deep listening, and personalized support.
While hospice care provides essential medical management, Medicare reimbursement structures limit the amount of time hospice teams can spend with patients and families—typically about 30 minutes per day.
